What it does

Inside the workbook.

Landed cost in, retail price out, with the margin that markup actually returns.

WHAT YOU GET

  • A 5-tab workbook: START HERE · PRICE ONE ITEM · PRICE BOOK · DASHBOARD · FAQ
  • 2 charts that update themselves as you type
  • Realistic example figures already filled in, so you can watch it work before you replace them
  • A plain-English START HERE guide built into the file, plus a 11-question FAQ

WHY THIS ONE

  • Works in FREE Google Sheets. Also opens in Excel. No add-ons.
  • One-time purchase. No subscription, no account, no upsell.
  • Nothing connects to your bank or your accounting software. You type the numbers in yourself.
  • Input cells are unlocked and formulas are protected so a stray paste cannot break the math — and there is NO password, so you can unlock and change anything.
  • Every formula was opened in a calculation engine, fully rebuilt, and checked against values worked out independently of the file. If one disagreed, it would not be on sale.

HOW IT WORKS

1. Download and open the file. Nothing to unzip.

2. Read the START HERE tab — about two minutes.

3. Type your numbers over the examples in the blue cells.

GOOGLE SHEETS

File > Import > Upload > choose the file > Replace spreadsheet. Every formula was written to work in Google Sheets as well as Excel — no XLOOKUP, no LAMBDA, nothing that breaks on import.

AI DISCLOSURE

This workbook was built with AI assistance. Every formula in it was then opened in a calculation engine and tested against independently calculated values before it was listed. The math is checked, not assumed.

This is a digital file only. No physical item will be shipped.

The proof

Every figure, worked out twice.

Before this workbook was listed it was opened in a calculation engine, rebuilt, and every headline figure was compared to a value computed independently in code from the same seed inputs. This is an excerpt of that ledger.

  1. BuildGenerated from a written spec, opened in a calculation engine, fully rebuilt.
  2. RecomputeEach figure worked out again in code — never read back from the sheet.
  3. CompareCell by cell, to a stated tolerance. One disagreement and it does not go on sale.

Questions

Before you buy.

Why is the margin cell red when I have not changed anything?

Because a 40% markup returns a 28.6% gross margin, and the sheet ships with a 30% margin floor. That is the arithmetic, not an error. Markup is measured against cost; margin is measured against price. To actually clear a 30% margin you need a 42.9% markup — the FLOOR CHECK block does that conversion for you.

What counts as landed cost?

Everything that happened to the item before it reached your job: the invoice price, inbound freight, the sales tax you actually paid, a waste or breakage allowance, and any flat per-unit handling adder you apply. If you price off the invoice line alone you are quietly donating the difference on every single unit.

Should the markup be the same for every category?

Usually not. The Price Book gives every row its own markup cell for exactly that reason. Fast-moving small-ticket items carry more markup than a big membrane roll a customer can price online in thirty seconds. What matters is the blended margin on the Dashboard, not any single row.

Where do the example prices come from?

They are real landed costs from a working contractor material price card — flat roofing membrane, coatings, repair materials and shingles — with the manufacturer brand names generalised out. Type your own numbers over them. Your supply house is not the same as anyone else's.

Why does the house fee hurt so much?

Because it comes off the top, not off the profit. On a job running a 28.6% materials margin, a 10% fee on gross revenue removes better than a third of what was left. That is the whole reason the job block sits on the same tab as the item price — an item can pass and the job it lives in can still fail.

Does it work in free Google Sheets?

Yes. Every workbook is built with an older, universal formula vocabulary so it imports into free Google Sheets without add-ons, and it opens in Excel as well. You get both in one purchase.

How was it tested?

The workbook was opened in a calculation engine, fully rebuilt, and 40 figures were compared to values worked out independently in code from the same seed inputs. One disagreement would have stopped the release. An excerpt of that ledger is on this page.
