Notes from the barn — week of Sep 14, 2026

Three English startup guides and one Spanish guide shipped, the measured organic footprint went from 10 ranked keywords to 13, and testing caught two unindexed guides.

Three English trade-startup guides and one Spanish guide went live this week, and the barn’s measured organic footprint grew from 10 ranked keywords to 13. Saturday’s test sweep also caught two brand-new guides sitting in Google’s “crawled, not indexed” bucket, and a federal citation we could not re-verify — so that section came out of the guide instead of going live unsourced.

What shipped this week?

Four guides and one product-page refresh. No guide went out Wednesday; Saturday is audit day and Sunday is this note, so neither carries one either.

Roofing is the one I can speak to directly — I run a roofing company in Richmond, Kentucky — and all three English guides land on the same free contractor break-even calculator, because the question under every trade is identical: how many jobs a month before the business is actually paying you? The full catalogue is on the workbooks shelf.

Where do these pages rank so far?

Still nowhere on the head terms. We measured all eight tracked calculator terms at depth 100 on Sep 20, 2026 (DataForSEO, Google US desktop) and workbookbarn.com appears in none of them — the same result as the Aug 30 baseline. That is what month two of a new domain looks like, and we would rather print it than skip it.

The number that did move is the long tail. A domain-wide pull the same day (DataForSEO Labs, ranked keywords, Google US) returned 13 keywords where a barn page ranks in the top 100, up from 10 on Sep 13 and 4 on Sep 6. Nothing dropped off. Best position is still 53. Three entries are new this week:

What did testing catch?

Two things. First, Saturday’s index sweep found the roofing and plumbing guides marked “Crawled — currently not indexed” in Search Console: Google fetched both pages and chose not to index them yet. Both are now in the refresh queue to be strengthened rather than resubmitted over and over.

Second, while writing Friday’s Spanish guide, the federal commercial-driver rule we wanted to cite would not come back from the government’s own eCFR service, so the licence section came out of the guide entirely. The rule here does not bend: if a number or a rule cannot be traced to its published source on the day of writing, it does not get published. Every figure in the workbooks is sourced and every formula is machine-checked the same way — that is the whole product.

What is next?

The ten-trade startup queue is finished, so the calendar returns to the calculator topics the free tools already run: a good DSCR for a rental, cap rate worked end to end, and why a 40% markup is only a 28.6% margin. Those pages get written against the free calculators so the reader can run their own numbers before deciding whether a workbook is worth $15. The two unindexed guides get a real content pass first.
